INTENT
At Meppershall Church of England Academy, it is our intention to provide a high quality science education that provides children with the foundations for understanding the world through the study of biology, chemistry and physics. Science is an integral part of our lives and the future of our planet and all pupils should be taught essential aspects of the knowledge, methods, processes and uses of science. We intend to enable our pupils to develop a sense of excitement and curiosity about natural phenomena. They should be encouraged to understand how science can be used to explain what is occurring, predict how things will behave, and analyse causes. Our curriculum will enable children to become enquiry based learners collaborating through researching, investigating and evaluating experiences. It will enable the development of understanding of the nature, processes and methods of science through different types of science enquiries that help children to answer scientific questions about the world around them. Teachers will ensure that all children are exposed to high quality teaching ensuring that learning is always based on a working scientifically approach. Our pupils will be equipped with the scientific knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of science, today and for the future. They will be encouraged to ask questions about the world around them and work scientifically to further their conceptual understanding and scientific knowledge. Children will be encouraged to understand how science can be used to explain what is occurring, predict how things will behave, and analyse causes. It will provide opportunities for the critical evaluation of evidence and rational explanation of scientific phenomena as well as opportunity to apply their mathematical knowledge to their understanding of science, including collecting, presenting and analysing data. Children will be immersed in key scientific vocabulary, which supports in the acquisition of scientific knowledge and understanding.
IMPLEMENTATION
How Science is taught at Meppershall Church of England Academy: In ensuring high standards of teaching and learning in science, we implement a curriculum that is progressive throughout the whole school. Planning for science is a process in which all teachers are involved to ensure that the school gives full coverage of, ‘The National Curriculum programmes of study for Science 2014’ and, ‘Understanding of the World’ in the Early Years Foundation Stage. Science teaching at Meppershall Church of England Academy is taught both in dedicated weekly science lessons and discretely through topic learning. We ensure that all children are provided with rich learning experiences that aim to:
- Prepare our children for life in an increasingly scientific and technological world today and in the future
- Use different contexts to maximise their pupils’ engagement with and motivation to study science
- Help our children acquire a growing understanding of the nature, processes and methods of scientific ideas
- Help develop and extend our children’s scientific concept of their world
- Build on our children’s natural curiosity and developing a scientific approach to problems
- To embed ‘working scientifically’ within the content of biology, chemistry and physics, focusing on the key features of scientific enquiry
- Develop the use of and be familiar with technical terminology
- Develop the use of computing in investigating and recording
- Make links between science and the world around them.
- Apply their mathematical knowledge to their understanding of science, including collecting, presenting and analysing data
IMPACT
The impact and measure of this is to ensure children know, apply and understand the matters, skills and processes of the science curriculum. All children will have:
- An understanding of the nature, processes and methods of science through different types of science enquiries that help them to answer scientific questions about the world around them
- A richer vocabulary which will enable to articulate their understanding of taught concepts
- Scientific knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of science, today and for the future
- An engagement with and motivation to study science
