Meppershall Geography Three I Statement

"The mountains rose, the valleys sank down to the place that you appointed for them."
Psalm 104:8

INTENT
Geography is essentially about understanding the world we live in. It helps to provoke and provide answers to questions about the natural and human aspects of the world. At Meppershall Academy children will;
  • develop a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people that will remain with them for the rest of their lives
  • gain knowledge and understanding of the Earth’s physical and human processes
  • develop knowledge and skills that are transferable to other curriculum areas
  • have a deeper understanding of God’s world and their place in it
IMPLEMENTATION
At Meppershall Geography is taught using a clear skills and knowledge progression. Existing skills and knowledge are built on year by year. Children will;
  • Have lessons that use a variety of teaching and learning styles.
  • Where possible, have learning that is local, relevant and real. Investigating the physical and human features of our environment. Develop skills, including map work skills in and around our school grounds and local area.
  • Build up an in-depth level of understanding of continents, countries, counties, cities and more localised places. We ensure that these areas of learning are revisited and utilised throughout the children’s journey at Meppershall.
  • Look closely at similarities, differences, patterns and change including growth and decay.
  • analyse cause and effect including global warming
IMPACT
The Geography intent for Meppershall Academy is to inspire children to be curious about the world around them and develop a sense of belonging and responsibility. This is assessed by book monitoring, learning walks and teacher assessment. Pupil voice monitoring is carried out termly by the subject leader. Knowledge and skills monitoring is carried out termly by class teachers and evaluated by SLT and subject leader.
