Dear Parents and Carers of Willows Class,

We hope you all had a lovely Summer Holiday and that your children are all refreshed and ready for a new school year. We are really looking forward to getting to know them and ensuring they have a successful and enjoyable Year 2!

Here is some information you might find useful to help your child settle in happily:

  • The teachers in Year 2 are Miss Natasha Hornsey (Mon, Tues & Wed) and Mrs Katharine Tiffin (Thurs and Fri). We aim to work as closely as possible to ensure a smooth mid-week transition. Miss Elson is our Teaching Assistant and works every morning in the class.
  • Mrs Newman (from Henlow) will teach PE on Thursday mornings.  The other PE lesson will be Wednesday afternoons. Please ensure your child has a full and named PE kit in school every day, as timetables occasionally change.  If ears are pierced, earrings should not be worn on PE days.
  • The children will be spending some time learning outside every Tuesday so please ensure they have a warm waterproof coat and appropriate footwear.
  • Our Topic for the term is Muck, Mess and Mixtures, and we will be reading ‘George’s Marvellous Medicine’ with the children. Please feel free to read along at home too if you like.
  • We would encourage you to hear your child read every day if possible (little and often is fine). When your child’s book needs changing, please ask them to place it in the basket by the classroom door. In school, your child will be heard weekly by the teacher in a Guided Reading session, and as frequently as necessary with their individual books.
  • Spellings will be tested weekly (usually Tuesdays). Please keep the practise sheet in Book Bags and encourage your child to practise daily.
  • You will receive a Homework Planner, which outlines Home Learning expectations for the Half Term.  It is designed for the children to complete some tasks independently and some with an adult. There is a selection to choose from, and there is no expectation to complete them all.
  • Please could you supply an old shirt or painting apron (named) for our art and design activities.

We are looking forward to meeting all of you as the weeks go by, but if you have any immediate concerns or questions please pop in for an informal chat after school, or make an appointment via the Office. Any urgent messages should be passed to the Office in the mornings. We are passionate about providing the best possible education for every child, and believe that involvement from home enhances this.

Kind regards

Natasha Hornsey and Katharine Tiffin
