Elms - Year 1

Tuesday 5th September

Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome to Elms class!

My name is Mrs. Adams and this year, the children will be finding out how to learn in more of a structured classroom environment. This process will happen gradually as we want the children to enjoy the learning as much as possible and hopefully not have too much of a surprise moving from Reception.

This term we will be studying the topic of Muck, Mess and Mixture, which we hope will allow the children to carry out lots of practical and fun activities that will allow them to learn without even realising it!

The biggest changes the children will face this year will be that they have lunch 15 minutes later than before and that there won’t be as much free play during lesson time. The children will still have plenty of activities to choose from while not in a focused group with me or our TA, Mrs. Mitchell, but the activities will be targeting our learning intentions for that day/ week.

The children will be having PE lessons on a Wednesday afternoon as well as on a Friday afternoon, so please make sure the children have all of the required PE kit, named or labelled in school for the end of the first week, hopefully by Wednesday! Please see the school website for our PE Kit policy.

We will also be spending lesson time outside on a Thursday so please make sure your children have their jumpers and coats in case it is cold outside. If the children could also bring wellies in then that would be preferable so that we can still go out even if it is a bit wet!

By the end of the week the children will have a reading book to go home with and we ask that you spend some time every night reading through some of their book with them throughout the year. This will help your child to keep up with the rigorous curriculum and continue to make progress in their reading and understanding. As we move further into the term, the children will start to be given spelling homework once a week, which will be due in on a Friday when we will hold the spelling test. The new words will then be sent out the same day.

I do ask that the children each bring in an apron of some kind e.g. an old adult shirt, named so that it can be used for art activities.

If you would like to speak to me further about anything, then I am available after school to answer questions and concerns. I am looking forward to working with your child/ children and hope they are just as excited as I am to get started!

Kind regards,

Mrs. Adams
